About Abbott

Abbott is a US healthcare company headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, with diagnostics among its main businesses alongside medical devices, nutrition and medicines. Its haematology analysers have long carried the CELL-DYN name, and its newest generation belongs to the Alinity family, which also covers its chemistry and immunoassay systems. The Alinity h-series received US FDA clearance in 2023; in Malaysia, what counts is MDA registration of the exact model. This page is a neutral buyer’s guide — it does not mean we stock Abbott analysers.

How Abbott’s optical analysers sort white cells

The CELL-DYN Ruby and Sapphire and the Alinity hq are built around MAPSS — multi-angle polarised scatter separation. The analyser measures the laser light each white cell scatters at several angles, including polarised and depolarised light, and uses that pattern to tell cell types apart. The CELL-DYN Ruby also counts red cells and platelets optically, and the Alinity hq reports a six-part white-cell differential.

Why it matters to a buyer

Every maker separates white cells differently, so the flags — and the samples that cause trouble — differ too. Judge the differential and its flags on your own abnormal samples, not on the brochure.

What analyser flags mean

Automated films

The Alinity hs prepares and stains blood films automatically, so samples that meet your review rules can go straight to microscopy.

What to check before buying an Abbott analyser

  • Match the class to your workload. Alinity and CELL-DYN Ruby analysers are built for laboratory volumes; a GP clinic is usually better served by a compact analyser with lower running costs.
  • Cost per reportable test at your volume, including start-up, shutdown, controls and calibrators.
  • Who supplies reagents, controls and calibrators, and who services the analyser in your state.
  • For the CELL-DYN Sapphire and other older models, whether reagents, parts and service are still available — and for how long.
  • MDA registration numbers for the exact model and every reagent.
  • LIS connection, and a sample comparison against your current analyser that includes low platelet counts.

Comparing Abbott with other brands

Compare like with like: an Alinity or CELL-DYN Ruby against other laboratory 5-part systems, and a compact CELL-DYN Emerald against other compact clinic analysers. Ask every supplier for the same things — throughput at your peak, reagent cost at your volume, flagging on your abnormal samples and local service response — and decide on those rather than the badge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Abbott Alinity hq?
The haematology analyser of Abbott’s Alinity h-series, built for high-volume laboratories. It can be paired with the Alinity hs slide maker and stainer.
Is the CELL-DYN Emerald a 3-part or 5-part analyser?
The original CELL-DYN Emerald is a compact 3-part analyser. The Emerald 22 and Emerald 22 AL report a 5-part differential.
What is MAPSS?
Multi-angle polarised scatter separation — Abbott’s way of identifying white cells from the laser light each cell scatters at several angles. It is used on the CELL-DYN Ruby and Sapphire and the Alinity hq.
