- 3-part differential
- White cells sorted by size into lymphocytes, mid-sized cells and granulocytes. Full guide
- 5-part differential
- White cells reported as neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. Full guide
- Blood film
- A stained smear examined under a microscope to check flagged automated results. Full guide
- Control blood
- Manufactured blood with known values run each day to check the analyser is accurate. Full guide
- Diluent / lyse
- Reagents that dilute the sample and break open red cells so white cells and haemoglobin can be measured. Full guide
- EDTA tube
- The purple-top tube whose anticoagulant preserves cells for the FBC. Full guide
- EQA
- External quality assessment — unknown samples from an outside provider to compare your results with other labs. Full guide
- FBC / CBC
- Full blood count / complete blood count — the same panel of red-cell, white-cell and platelet results. Full guide
- Flag
- An analyser warning that a sample may contain abnormal cells or interference and needs review. Full guide
- Flow cytometry
- Measuring cells by laser light scatter and fluorescence as they pass a beam; used by 5-part analysers. Full guide
- Haematology analyser
- An automated instrument that counts and sizes blood cells and reports the full blood count. Full guide
- HCT
- Haematocrit — the share of blood volume made up of red cells; watched closely in dengue. Full guide
- HGB
- Haemoglobin concentration, the key number for anaemia. Full guide
- Impedance (Coulter principle)
- Counting and sizing cells by the change in electrical resistance as each passes through a small aperture. Full guide
- Levey-Jennings chart
- A chart of daily control results against target and limits, used to spot drift. Full guide
- LIS
- Laboratory information system — software that receives analyser results and links them to patients. Full guide
- MCV
- Mean corpuscular volume — average red-cell size; low in iron deficiency and thalassaemia trait. Full guide
- MS ISO 15189
- The Malaysian adoption of the international standard for medical laboratory quality and competence. Full guide
- PLT
- Platelet count; falls in dengue and some other conditions. Full guide
- RDW
- Red-cell distribution width — how much red-cell size varies. Full guide
