CBC Machine: Complete Blood Count Analyzers and Their Parameters

A parameter-by-parameter guide to what a CBC analyzer reports, how to read its histograms and flags, and when it needs a human eye.

CBC parameters explained

ParameterWhat it means
WBCTotal white cells — infection, inflammation, marrow problems
RBCRed-cell count
HGBHaemoglobin concentration — the anaemia number
HCTProportion of blood volume made of red cells — watched closely in dengue
MCVAverage red-cell size — small in iron deficiency and thalassaemia trait
MCH / MCHCHaemoglobin per cell and its concentration
RDWVariation in red-cell size
PLTPlatelet count — falls in dengue
MPVAverage platelet size

Histograms and scattergrams

Histograms

Every analyser plots cell-size curves for red cells, white cells and platelets. A shifted or double peak can reveal mixed populations or interference.

Scattergrams

5-part analysers also draw two-dimensional plots that separate the five white-cell types and show abnormal clusters.

When the analyser needs a blood film

  • Flags for blasts, atypical lymphocytes or immature granulocytes.
  • Platelet clumping or giant platelets suspected.
  • Nucleated red cells or red-cell fragments flagged.
  • Results that do not fit the clinical picture.

Thalassaemia and the CBC

Thalassaemia trait is common in Malaysia. A low MCV and MCH with a normal or high RBC count is a classic screening pattern on the CBC; confirmation needs haemoglobin analysis at a laboratory.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBC the same as FBC?
Yes. Complete blood count (CBC) and full blood count (FBC) are two names for the same test.
Can a CBC machine detect dengue?
No machine diagnoses dengue from a CBC alone, but falling platelets and rising haematocrit on serial CBCs are key monitoring signs. Dengue is confirmed with NS1 antigen or serology tests.
Can a CBC analyzer replace a microscope?
For most normal samples, yes. Flagged or abnormal samples still need a blood film reviewed by trained staff.
