Refurbished Hematology Analyzer: What to Check Before Buying Used

A second-hand FBC machine can look cheap on day one. These checks show whether it will still be cheap — and reliable — a year later.

Where the risks are

Reagent supply

If a model is discontinued, its reagents can become hard to obtain. On a closed system, no reagent means no results.

Manufacturer support

Older models reach an end-of-service date, after which parts and software updates may stop.

Wear

Apertures, pumps, valves, probes and tubing wear with use. How the previous owner ran and maintained the analyser matters more than its age.

Calibration after moving

A relocated analyser must be recalibrated and pass controls before any patient result is reported.

Checklist before you buy a used analyser

  • MDA registration numbers for the model and its reagents, checked on the MDA register.
  • Reagent and control supply to your state, confirmed in writing.
  • The manufacturer’s support status for the model and availability of parts.
  • Service and maintenance records, and the analyser’s sample counter if it has one.
  • Who installs, calibrates and trains your staff — and at what cost.
  • Warranty terms in writing.
  • A demonstration running controls and patient samples compared with an outside lab.
  • Previous patient data removed from the analyser’s memory.

How we can help

We quote new analysers. If you are weighing up a used unit, send us its model, age and your daily FBC count, and we will give you a written quote for a new analyser so you can compare the total cost honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Is a refurbished hematology analyzer worth it?
It can be for a low-volume site if reagents, parts and service are still available for that model. If any of those are uncertain, the savings can disappear at the first breakdown.
What should I check about MDA registration on a used FBC machine?
Ask the seller for the MDA registration numbers of the model and its reagents and check them on the MDA register. Analysers and reagents are IVD medical devices covered by the Medical Device Act 2012.
Do you sell second-hand FBC machines?
No. We quote new analysers, and we are happy to put a new quote side by side with a used unit you are considering.
